  • Daniel Ahern Bursary

Daniel Ahern began his teaching career at Nar Nar Goon as a private tutor to the O’Brien’s but evolved in time to be the head teacher of a local Catholic school.

Inspector Bonwich visited the Toomuc Creek (Pakenham) school in March 1857. Bonwich found a wattle and daub school building of a wretched description, erected some four years ago at the cost of 50 (pounds). It had no floor or windows, he observed, and two large cavities afforded air and light. However, to the Inspector’s surprise, he found, operating within these miserable physical circumstances, a school in a very efficient condition except for understandable defective writing. Bonwich was amazed at the ingenuity of both Ahern and his students who had an utter insufficiency of text books, copy books, writing material and rough slabs of logs for desks.

Daniel continued teaching in the Dandenong area for many years and became one of the most well-known and respected Catholic teachers and laymen of the last century in Dandenong.

The Director of Catholic Education Diocese of Sale, Ms Maria Kirkwood, is proud to offer this bursary to non-teachers in Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Sale.
