About the School

St Mary’s is a Catholic co-educational primary school situated on the western edge of the town of Bairnsdale. The school exists to provide a Catholic education for the students of Bairnsdale and surrounding districts.

Catholic schooling was first offered in Bairnsdale as early as the 1870’s but the earliest registration was not until 1898 when the Sisters of Sion opened a Sub-Primary School (RSB No 138) in Riverine St, Bairnsdale. The school had both a boys and girls school.  A convent high school was opened in 1912. These schools later became St Mary’s Bairnsdale and Nagle College, Bairnsdale respectively. St Mary’s has also been administered by the Sisters of St Joseph and the Presentation Sisters.

St Mary’s Primary School moved to its current site in 2004 and has modern facilities including an up-to-date library and a new ICT Laboratory. It also has a Chapel, a large multi-purpose hall, expansive playing and recreational spaces and access to Nagle College facilities.

The school has maintained a close relationship with Nagle College, Bairnsdale, which combined with its proximity to the school, ensures a smooth transition from primary to secondary schooling for students.

St Mary’s Primary School motto is ‘Learning and Growing Together’. The school takes seriously its responsibility to support the wellbeing needs of its students through a well structured pastoral care program. The school has a relationship with Shizuoka Salesio School in Japan and each year hosts students and staff in a homestay program.
