Coronavirus advice

10 March, 2020

Diocese of Sale Catholic Education Limited (DOSCEL), is continuing to monitor the impact of COVID-19 (Coronavirus).

The situation is changing rapidly and our immediate focus is to minimise the spread of this, and other viruses, in our schools and communities.

The best defence against most viruses is practising good hand and respiratory (cough/sneeze) hygiene.

Please ensure that the following key messages are reinforced:

  • wash hands frequently with soap and water, before and after eating, and after going to the toilet
  • avoid touching the face (eyes, nose and mouth)
  • cover coughs and sneezes (preferably into the crook of the elbow) and dispose of any used tissues appropriately
  • avoid contact with others (more than 1.5 metres from people) if they, or another person, is unwell.

Students and staff should not attend school if they are feeling unwell and should remain at home until symptoms resolve. Appropriate medical assistance should be sought as required.

Parents/guardians/carers of students should make sure that any student returning from mainland China (not including Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan) from 1 February 2020, Iran from 1 March 2020, Republic of Korea from 5 March or Italy from 11 March, is isolated at home and should not attend school until 14 days after they were last in mainland China, Iran, Republic of Korea or Italy.

This recommendation does not apply retrospectively. It applies only to students who were in mainland China on or after 1 February 2020, Iran on or after 1 March 2020, Republic of Korea on or after 5 March 2020, Italy on or after 11 March 2020.

The existing advice remains that parents/guardians/carers of students should ensure that any student is isolated at home and should not attend school for 14 days:

  • following exposure to any confirmed novel coronavirus case; or
  • after leaving Hubei Province.

If you have any queries, please contact the Principal of your school.
