St Francis Xavier celebrates opening and blessing

9 September, 2019

On Thursday 5 September, St Francis Xavier College Beaconsfield celebrated the opening of its newest building. The General Purpose Flexible Learning Area (GPFLA) was officially blessed by the Most Reverend Bishop Patrick O’Regan DD, Bishop of Sale and was opened by The Honourable James Merlino, Deputy Premier, Education Minister and Member for Monbulk.

The project represents a new era for the College as it strives to accommodate the needs of students in a rapidly growing part of Melbourne, and offer them learning facilities that give them a sense of themselves as independent learners, as collaborative learners and as digital learners.

The process for designing this building saw the school consult with students in 2015 and 2016, asking them to describe how they preferred to learn; as individuals, as small groups and as a class of students. Similarly, St Francis Xavier College consulted with leaders of learning around needs and preferences as well. This vision was then given to the architects with the challenge to design a series of spaces that would respect the nature of learners born in this century, surrounded by technology and choice.

The College is grateful to the State Government for their generosity in providing a grant of $2 million to assist with the funding of the $11 million project.
