Cowes school blessed by Bishop

26 August, 2019

The Catholic Bishop of Sale, Most Reverend Patrick O’Regan, recently visited Cowes to bless and formally open Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Primary School.

Bishop O’Regan was joined by Director of Catholic Education for the Diocese of Sale, Ms Maria Kirkwood, Bass MLA Jordan Crugnale, and Principal of the school, Mrs Catherine Blackford, along with members and friends of the school community and St Mary’s Parish for the celebration.

Ms Kirkwood said that it was wonderful to see Catholic education flourishing on Phillip Island.

“We knew that a Catholic school was needed in Cowes to cater for families in the area seeking high quality and affordable Catholic Education. In just a year and a half, this school has developed a safe and nurturing environment for students and families, filled with hope and supported by high expectations,” she said.

Mrs Blackford said the state-of-the-art school has been concentrating on its core values of compassion, courage and creativity, while developing a strong sense of community.

“Our Christ-centred community is focused on quality teaching and learning. This message seems to be spreading, with our numbers growing from 18 when we opened in 2018 to more than 50 this year.

“We hope to welcome more bright young students into our community in the coming years as we continue to dedicate ourselves to the development of the whole child through faith, collaboration and culture,” she said.

The school features four general learning areas, an art and science room, breakout area and administration building, as well as sporting courts and a playground. The $3.3 million project was funded by a $1.8 million grant from the Victorian Government and loans from the Catholic
Development Fund.
