Bushfires in Gippsland

7 March, 2019

A message from the Director of Catholic Education, Maria Kirkwood.

Much of eastern Victoria has been affected by bushfire recently, and several of our schools were temporarily closed due to the threat of bushfires and poor air quality.

Lumen Christi Primary School in Churchill, St Ita’s Primary School in Drouin, Columba Primary School in Bunyip, and St James Primary School in Nar Nar Goon were closed on March 4 and 5.

St Mary's Primary School in Maffra, St Michael's Primary School in Heyfield and St Patrick's Primary School in Stratford were closed on March 6.

The decision to close the schools was made by Diocese of Sale Catholic Education Limited (DOSCEL) in consultation with relevant government agencies.

The welfare of our students and staff is our highest priority, and our prayers are with those who have been affected by the fires.

We are currently working on ways to provide counselling to those who may need it.

We’re deeply thankful to all the emergency services personnel who protected our community. As a direct result of their tireless work, the fires have not caused any permanent damage to school buildings or property.
